Despite news briefings for non-aggressive police action, the rising death toll reflects questionable methods from the General Service Unit. Two weeks into the conflict an independent journalist caught on video footage a GSU soldier firing live ammunition into a crowd at point blank range, killing one and injuring another.   A protester leads the way for ODM supporters against GSU resistance outside Kibera slum in Nairobi. The protesters attempt to reach Ngong road, a main highway leading from Kibera into the city center. Though they face heavy resistance, the protesters intend to participate in the "Million Man March" scheduled by the Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga to express dissatisfaction of PNU candidate Mwai Kibaki and support for their opposition leader, Odinga.   Protesters fill the streets of Nairobi with stones, metal, and wood to obstruct traffic flow and halt normalcy.   Flames fill the streets where ODM supporters block roads with flaming piles of wood and tires. In the city center, protests continue as mobs of ODM supporters gather to march in the streets. The General Service Unit is a paramilitary wing of the Kenya Military and Police, consisting of highly trained police officers and special forces soldiers.   5:00 pm - December 30, 2007 - Less than half an hour after president Mwai Kibaki was sworn in for a second term, the streets of Kibera are filled with smoke and the sounds of rioters. Burning and looting ensue throughout the slums. Locals living on the edge of the Kibera look back as they flea in fear.
